At Shred and Slytech, we aim to inspire change and make a positive impact on the world around us. And we’re honored to stand with and support kindred spirits in these efforts.

1% For The Planet

As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, we’re part of a coalition of over 1,200 businesses that commit to donating financial support to environmental causes. Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbon Flies Founder Craig Mathews created the organization in 2002 to leverage the collective action and aspirations of businesses committed to protecting the environment. Since its inception, members of this coalition have donated more than $175 million to nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the health of our planet.

Shred joined 1% for the Planet in July 2017. Through our commitment to the organization, we donate one percent of all sales from our website to environmental initiatives. Like other members of the organization, we firmly believe that our business can be a means for doing good and affecting change. We’re far from perfect, but we’re working to reduce our environmental impact, improve the world around us, and inspire others to do the same. 1% for the Planet provides a meaningful opportunity to translate our beliefs into action by supporting nonprofit organizations that have a track record of success in addressing crucial environmental issues.

Protect Our Winters (POW)

No environmental problem is more pressing and pervasive than climate change. Guided by our love for the outdoors and our thirst for snow, we care deeply about addressing it. And yet it’s a problem in which we are complicit. From the resources we use to craft our products to the energy consumed in transporting them, our business impacts the planet and contributes to climate change. Consequently, we’re working to reduce these adverse effects through our products, actions, and advocacy. We’re continually refining how we create our products and conduct business. In doing this, we hope to not only minimize our impact on the environment, but also inspire others to do the same.

As part of our commitment to One Percent for the Planet, we support Protect Our Winters and its efforts to combat climate change and educate the public about its effects. Founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, POW has been especially successful in engaging the snowsports community and mobilizing it to take action on climate change initiatives.

Kelly McGarry Foundation

Shred and Slytech are honored to partner with the Kelly McGarry Foundation. McGarry was a legendary freeride mountain biker and a Shred team rider. After he tragically passed away in 2016, his friends and family created the Kelly McGarry Foundation to honor his legacy and to support the mountain biking community in his home country of New Zealand. The foundation aims to emulate Kelly’s infectious, down-to-earth personality and generosity by providing grants and financial support to a range of mountain bike projects. Shred has partnered with the foundation to develop a signature line of products that pays homage to Kelly while supporting the organization.

Environmentally Conscious Design

As part of our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, we’re continually experimenting with how we design, manufacture, and package our products, as well as how we conduct business. Often, meaningful changes begin with reimagining a single product. By questioning our assumptions and historic approaches, we’re able to develop fresh ideas that can be incorporated more broadly into our product line and operations. There’s no greater example of this than our latest goggle.

With the goal of inspiring others to reduce their environmental impact, we developed a goggle that uses reclaimed, recycled, and organic materials. And thanks to partnerships with Connora Technologies, The CAPiTA Mothership, and Protect Our Winters, this new goggle—the Simplify Natural—features content recycled from the snowboard manufacturing process. This collaboration marks the first time that multiple companies in the snow sports industry have teamed up to provide manufacturing scraps with a new life.

The goggle showcases a rig, pins, and adjuster made from epoxy resin that is reclaimed and recycled from The CAPiTA Mothership production facility. Recognized as a leader in environmentally responsible manufacturing, The Mothership is 100% hydro-powered and relies heavily on locally-sourced materials. The Mothership will be using a new resin, ReRez™, to produce select boards. Developed by Connora Technologies, ReRez's innovative formulation allows flashing waste to be recycled rather than discarded in a landfill.

In addition to its rig, pins, and adjuster, the Simplify Natural features a slew of materials that try to reduce impacts on the environment as much as possible. The goggle sports a frame that uses 30% recycled content, a strap made with 100% organic cotton, and face foam that includes a layer of bamboo fleece. The accompanying goggle bag is made with 100% recycled plastic derived from water bottles while the goggle box is made with 80% recycled paper and has a recyclable PET window. Two percent of the sales of the Simplify Natural will also be donated to Protect Our Winters to bring awareness to the fight against climate change.
