At SHRED. we aim to inspire change and make a positive impact on the world around us. And we’re honored to stand with and support kindred spirits in these efforts.
As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, we’re part of a coalition of over 1,200 businesses that commit to donating financial support to environmental causes. Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbon Flies Founder Craig Mathews created the organization in 2002 to leverage the collective action and aspirations of businesses committed to protecting the environment. Since its inception, members of this coalition have donated more than $175 million to nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the health of our planet.
SHRED. joined 1% for the Planet in July 2017. Through our commitment to the organization, we donate one percent of all sales from our website to environmental initiatives. Like other members of the organization, we firmly believe that our business can be a means for doing good and affecting change. We’re far from perfect, but we’re working to reduce our environmental impact, improve the world around us, and inspire others to do the same. 1% for the Planet provides a meaningful opportunity to translate our beliefs into action by supporting nonprofit organizations that have a track record of success in addressing crucial environmental issues.
No environmental problem is more pressing and pervasive than the climate crisis. Guided by our love for the outdoors and our thirst for snow, we care deeply about addressing it. And yet it’s a problem in which we are complicit. From the resources we use to craft our products to the energy consumed in transporting them, our business impacts the planet and contributes to our climate crisis. Consequently, we’re working to reduce these adverse effects through our products, actions, and advocacy. We’re continually refining how we create our products and conduct business. In doing this, we hope to not only minimize our impact on the environment, but also inspire others to do the same.
As part of our commitment to One Percent for the Planet, we support Protect Our Winters and its efforts to combat the climate crisis and educate the public about its effects. Founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, POW has been especially successful in engaging the snowsports community and mobilizing it to take action on the climate emergency.
SHRED. BigShow Recycled Goggles Line
As part of our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, we’re continually experimenting with how we design, manufacture, and package our products, as well as how we conduct business. Often, meaningful changes begin with reimagining a single product. By questioning our assumptions and historic approaches, we’re able to develop fresh ideas that can be incorporated more broadly into our product line and operations. There’s no greater example of this than our latest goggle.
With the goal of inspiring others to reduce their environmental impact, we have eliminated plastic from our goggles packaging and developed a goggle that uses straps made with reclaimed and recycled plastic bottles.
“After having completely eliminated plastic from our packaging, we decided to take it another step further by pioneering an innovation we are incredibly proud of.” explains SHRED. Co-founder, Chairman, and two-time Olympic Champ Ted Ligety. “Inspired by what leading outerwear brands have done for years in their space, we thought to show that other categories can do their part as well, and inspire others to do the same.“
SHRED. Co-founder and CEO Carlo Salmini adds “Not easy for a small and independent eyewear and protection brand, but that’s what makes this achievement even more special for us.”
84% of the strap is made with recycled plastic bottles, which will allow us to recycle about 170 plastic bottles every 100 pairs of goggles made.
Salmini explains. “After being the first goggle brand to remove all plastic components from goggles’ packaging for 2020-2021, we challenged ourselves to raise the bar again. We know we won’t be changing the world one goggle at a time, but we want to bring awareness to the issue of single use plastic and inspire change.”
We are also committed to remove plastic from all of the packaging of our helmets, protection, and other product lines in the near future.
The BigShow Recycled line will be featured in the Amazify, Smartefy, and Monocle models and available at specialty retailers and through shredoptics.com in the fall of 2021.
